5-20-22: Structure Fire Response, DZ Middle School

On Friday May 20,2022 at approximately 10:41PM, Capital City Fire Rescue responded to 1600 Renninger Drive, DZ Middle School, for an automatic fire alarm.

Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered smoke inside the school and the fire alarm system activated.

A small fire was found in the first floor Life Skills classroom and was quickly extinguished.

A fire origin and cause investigation was conducted. Interviews with school staff on site revealed that a school event had occurred prior to the fire. A double boiler had been used to melt chocolate for a chocolate fountain. While the chocolate was removed from the stove, the burner was not turned off. As a result, the water boiled out and the pans continued to heat the pans. The heat generated melted a plastic light cover for the light directly above the stove top and dropped into the hot pans. The plastic started to melt and burn which activated the building smoke alarm system. The sprinkler head in the same area as the fire origin did not activate due the heat generated going up the stove top ventilation fan unit.

There were no injuries reported and damage is estimated at approximately $10,000.

At the time of this call, CCFR career staff were responding to two separate medical emergencies with two ambulances. The first due engine to this incident was assisting on one of the medical calls at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center which caused delay in response. The engine from downtown ended up making the initial arrival as well as two volunteers.
